Profiles In Science: Robert Oppenheimer (1964) By Michel Rouze

Oppenheimer as a young graduate from Harvard spent four years (1925-1929) in Europe, taking part in the quantum revolution--the great intellectual ferment out of which came modern physics. He then worked for a dozen years as a brilliant teacher of advanced physics at the University of California, where he was the idol of his students.

In 1942, he was appointed scientific director of the Manhattan Project; in other words, he was responsible for the creation of the two atom bombs dropped on Japan. History had thrust this sensitive, deeply civilized man into a dilemma that has crucially shaped his life ever since.

In 1947 Oppenheimer became Director of the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton. In 1953, when the McCarthy witch hunt was in full cry, he was 'tried' by the Personnel Committee of the Atomic Energy Commission. The charges against him were, to say the least, dubious; and these confused proceedings showed glaringly what can happen when a liberal intellectual gets mixed up in 20th-century power politics.
