The defendants staffed a sanitorium in Hadamar Germany where they participated in killing more than 400 Russian and Polish nationals by lethal injections. The preferred defenses of superior orders, of necessity, and of purported legality under German law were ineffectual.
 
This is Volume IV in the War Crimes Trials Series. After 60+ years the significance of the Foreword by Justice Robert H Jackson might not be obvious to all. He served as Chief prosecutor of the first War Crimes Trial in Nuremberg, a task which could have overwhelmed a lesser man. His largest contribution, in combination with President Truman and the concurrence of the Allies (albeit with great reluctance in some cases), was to establish the principle of law that there are acts committed during the war which should be punished at the close of hostilities, but only after providing the accused with the opportunity for a fair trial.
