Sidney Cotton: The Last Plane Out Of Berlin (2003) By Jeffrey Watson

Sidney Cotton was a superb pilot, a talented inventor, a businessman who was decidedly shady - and a spy.

Born in Queensland, he served as a pilot in World War I, and over the next twenty years did everything from delivering mail in Newfoundland to entering the world of aerial reconnaissance on behalf of MI6, making numerous spy flights over Germany and Italy.

For a time he had the direct support of Churchill but fell out with the authorities because of his unorthodox style - which included accepting money to fly a businessman out of Paris as it fell.

Before the beginning of WWII, Australian businessman/entrepreneur Cotton was recruited by MI6 to fly over Germany and Italy to take photos of sensitive military sites. He posed as a businessman and, in that guise, met Goering and other high-ranking Nazis.

A secret mission to bring Goering to England was aborted and Cotton escaped from Berlin just as was declared. He was courted by the rich and powerful and was given his own secret unit, but was sacked before the fall of France.

After the war, he made a fortune running guns to India. This biography reveals a colourful and enigmatic personality - the classic loner in a world of intrigue and chaos.
