Ringed in Steel: Armored Cavalry, Vietnam 1967-68 (1986) By Michael D. Mahler

During the height of the Vietnam war, the armored cavalry saw action in every hotspot on the map. From the terrifying New Year's Eve Mekong Delta ambush to the horrors of the Tet Offensive, here is Major Mahler's dramatic account of armored combat, when his cavalry squadron brought steel and death to the steaming jungles of Southeast Asia.

Mike Mahler describes the feeling of being part of an armored cavalry unit; military maneuvers, problems in command, the incredible use of the tank in jungle warfare-vehicle maintenance and the passionate devotion of the men to their machines are part of the picture. The retrieval of a damaged tank is as hair-raising as any war exploit. Mahler also has an intimate knowledge of the Vietnamese, their fears and dilemmas. During the year 1967-68, the author was a major, serving first in brigade headquarters north of Saigon, then as executive officer in a cavalry squadron - from Phuoc Vinh to Quan Loi; on to Danang and Hue; then to Quang Tri and Dong Ha.
