Military Strategy: Soviet Doctrine and Concepts (1963) By V. D. Sokolovsky

A somewhat chilling roll out of Soviet military doctrine (there is a very useful chapter on “Soviet Military Strategy 1917-1945) and nuclear strategy which assumed that capitalism was out to destroy communism and any war between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R would be to the death. Some insights: (1) nuclear weapons were to be used as an essential part of war-making (“basic arms in future wars”), (2) massive first-strike use of them was preferable to holding them back (“the effectiveness of the application of force at the very beginning of the war”), (3) “escalation” or “flexible response” was not to be considered as the nuclear war was strictly a “go/no go” paradigm and (4) The USSR. would be the ultimate victor. Please read this work before making any pronouncements about the Cold War, let alone the nuclear strategies of either the U.S. or the USSR. A very important and illuminating work.
