Heliopolis- Luna Park Postcard (c. WWI)

 

The Heliopolis Palace Hotel in Cairo, Egypt, was the location of No. 1 Australian General Hospital (1AGH) from January 1915, during World War I. It was close to Cairo Luna Park, and the hospital progressively expanded to use the Luna Park buildings during 1915 and 1916. Additional local buildings were also used as casualties increased. 1AGH moved to France in March 1916. Heliopolis is a now a north-eastern suburb of Cairo.

 

The postcard from Private. Syd Barrow has written message back home to his family.

 

1068 Private Sydney Joseph BARROW, a 23 year old Stock Salesman from Sydney, New South Wales. He enlisted on 4 July 1915; and at the conclusion of the war Returned to Australia, 29 April 1919.

 

He was a member of the 12th Australian Light Horse Regiment, AIF, 5th Reinforcements, that embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A32 Themistocles 5 October 1915.
