Hadley writes of his experiences as a trainee pilot, an operational pilot and as a flight deck officer in the Fleet Air Arm during World War II. He saw action against the Japanese in Sumatra and gave a vivid account of the raid on Sigli. The author really brings home just what it was like learning to fly in those dark and distant days of the Second World War.
 
Dunstan Hadley has a charm and a wit that shine throughout this book, and there is a good amount of humour throughout as well.
