Snow, and 'guests' such as General de Gaulle, with those of ordinary people: a social worker in Notting Hill, a rich young widow, an East End policeman, a firefighter, a conscientious objector, and even a girl detained under the controversial 18b regulations.
 
He has also made use of the fascinating Mass-Observation reports, in which Londoners said exactly what they thought of the war. The result is a book which reads like a novel, but has the force of truth.
