U.S. Marines invaded the island of Iwo Jima 80 years ago, on February 19, 1945. It was the bloodiest battle in Marine Corps history, with one third of World War II Marines killed at Iwo Jima. Chuck Lindberg, a heroic Minnesota WWII veteran, was among the survivors.
In this 2005 documentary, WCCO journalists interviewed Lindberg about his experience as an Iwo Jima flamethrower and his role in the iconic flag raising.
This special 2025 presentation features behind-the-scenes reflections with Amelia Santaniello and original filmmakers David Schechter, Tom Aviles, and Lino Rulli.
